Pathcare Learnership Programme

The PathCare Academy for Training and Development was established in Cape Town in February 2006 with the aim to help address the South African skills shortages in the pathology sector in particular. The PathCare Academy was the first centre in South Africa where phlebotomists were trained. PathCare also developed courses for laboratory technicians and laboratory assistants.

The PathCare Academy offers this programme for the training of Phlebotomy Technician Learnership (Further Education and Training Certificate: Phlebotomy Techniques, NQF level 4). The two-year course has been successfully offered by the Academy since its inception when we engaged South Africa’s first Phlebotomy Technician Learnership. PathCare led the process of developing this qualification with the support of the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA). The qualification is approved and authorised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and is run as a learnership under the auspices of the HWSETA.

Pathcare Learnership (Phlebotomy Technician Learnership) Requirements

There are minimum entry qualifications an applicant should possess to be selected for the Phlebotomy Technician Learnership).

A relevant Technical Qualification (NQF level 4).
Grade 12 with biology and mathematics, or maths literacy.
Resident with a valid South African ID.
Have a valid driver’s license, Where applicable.
Work in shifts or work the extra hours.
Responsive or providing good service to customer needs.
Process and collect body products and blood.
