Merseta Learnership Programme
The Manufacturing, Engineering, and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (merSETA) is one of the 21 Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) established to promote skills development in terms of the Skills Development Act of 1998 (as amended). The 21 SETAs broadly reflect different sectors of the South African economy. The merSETA like all other SETAs, plays a central role in making sure that the National Skills Development Strategy (NSDS) is fulfilled. Its mission is to increase access to high-quality and relevant skills development and training opportunities to reduce inequalities and unemployment and to promote employability and participation in the economy.
Merseta Learnership is a learning programme that leads to an occupational qualification. This is a structured learning process for gaining theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the workplace leading to a qualification registered on the NQF. It includes classroom-based learning at a training center and on-the-job training at the workplace. The length of a learnership will differ but will normally not be less than one year (18 months). This learnership is provided to learners who may be existing employees or new entrants. On successful completion of the learnership, a national qualification is awarded to the learner.
