Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA) is a South African national entity that focuses on skills development in the health and social development sectors as well as the veterinary sector. In addition to being a national entity, HWSETA also acts as a skills development authority, and offers service, but also works as part of the public trust that is changing people’s lives, enhancing their employability and aligning their skills to the South African economy.
Social Auxiliary Workers are supportive of social work services to achieve the aims of Social Work. This means that the auxiliary social worker assists or supports the social worker in working with individuals, families, groups or communities. Social Auxiliary Work is part and parcel of the social work profession. The social auxiliary worker’s task is mainly of a social care nature focusing on the primary needs of individuals, families, groups and communities. A social auxiliary worker works under the guidance and control of a social worker.
HWSETA Social Auxiliary worker Learnership is an opportunity offered to young people who have completed school, college or learning at other training institutions to solve social, emotional, developmental, behavioural and financial problems in an agency framework. At the end of this programme, Social Auxiliary worker learners will be qualified to provide basic counselling and support services to individuals and families with socio-economic challenges. Facilitate educational and support groups towards achieving the developmental goals of the group. Facilitate participatory development in communities to address their common socio-economic needs and to promote social justice. Collect and collate data to inform social services interventions. The duration of the qualification is one to two years, then the learnership will last for that period.
In general, at HWSETA social auxiliary worker Learnership assists the social worker with
- Prevention, education and development programmes (e.g. life skills education, economic empowerment, managing stress and conflict, preparation for the different life cycle stages, recreation programmes for specific people at risk).
- Community-based care (e.g. direct services aimed at addressing basic needs such as food, clothing and transport) and community or group need such as establishing community-based care facilities).
- Accessing and establishing resources (e.g. educating communities about how to access and use available resources, and capacitating communities and groups to establish resources).
- Practical support (e.g. material support, practical support, emotional support, practical arrangements, recruitment of volunteers and aftercare services).
- Administrative support (e.g. opening files, keeping records, taking minutes of meetings, keeping statistics).
- Research (e.g. completing questionnaires, processing research data, implementing research findings).
NB: At the end of the programme candidate will be awarded an NQF-registered qualification, that is recognised nationally. They will receive a certificate stating the qualification and the area of skill development.

The minimum qualification an ideal candidate must possess to be selected for a Social Auxiliary worker Learnership are:
- Must be a holder of a valid Grade 10,11 Certificate qualification
- National Senior Certificate or National Certificate or equivalent.
- Competency in Languages/ Communication and Mathematics/Methodical Literacy
- Computer literacy will add advantages.
- Clear and clean Criminal record.

The closing date for the programme is available when Employers advertise such opportunities. HWSETA advertises funded opportunities in May -June each year.
HWSETA Social Auxiliary worker Learnership Stipend
A specified minimum learner allowance must be paid to HWSETA Social Auxiliary worker learnership team. This is not a salary but covers expenses like travel and meals. Currently, be informed that HWSETA will not fund these learnerships until the matter is resolved, you should contact the relevant SETA for more information
Note: The amount paid as a learner allowance depends on the SETA, type of learnership and the level of qualification. The allowances and conditions are agreed to with each learner before the commencement of the learnership.
